Puerto Vallarta is taking a leading role in a nationwide effort to combat plastic pollution along Mexico’s coastlines. As part of the National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleanup and Conservation, launched by the Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the city will help lead the charge to remove plastic waste from its beaches. The goal is to eliminate all plastic debris from Mexico’s beaches within the next five years.
This initiative responds to the urgent problem of over 5 trillion pounds of plastic waste contaminating the world’s oceans. By focusing on Puerto Vallarta’s renowned beaches, the campaign aims to restore natural habitats for local wildlife and preserve the scenic beauty that attracts millions of visitors each year.
The cleanup effort in Puerto Vallarta is scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 5, 2025, with volunteers encouraged to participate. The city’s beaches will join other key locations such as Progreso, Yucatán; Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo; Acapulco, Guerrero; and San Felipe, Baja California, in launching this important initiative.
Interested volunteers can find registration details and safety guidelines through the official social media pages of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The campaign invites everyone to help keep Puerto Vallarta’s beaches clean and protect its natural environment.
Participants are advised to wear comfortable, light clothing, bring hats or caps, apply sunscreen, avoid single-use plastics, arrive early, and follow all safety protocols during the event.
This effort marks a significant step toward safeguarding Puerto Vallarta’s coastal ecosystems, ensuring that both residents and visitors can enjoy its natural beauty for generations to come.
