As June approaches, Puerto Vallarta prepares for the upcoming Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting season, a critical period for conservation. Led by the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability, the season runs from next month through January 2026.
Each summer, thousands of Olive Ridley turtles return to their birthplace beaches in Puerto Vallarta to lay eggs. These nests are carefully relocated to protected zones shortly after laying to prevent damage from visitors and predators. This proactive measure helps ensure the survival of hatchlings.
At the Holi Beach hatchery, preparations are already underway, including sand exchanges to prevent fungi and improve nest safety. While the exact number of nests is unpredictable, beaches across the city are expected to see active nesting activity.
Community involvement is a key focus this season. The Department will conduct environmental education campaigns, and residents and visitors can participate in releasing hatchlings—an inspiring experience that highlights the importance of protecting this endangered species.
The Municipal Government urges everyone to support conservation efforts by respecting nesting areas and participating responsibly. Collective efforts aim to ensure a successful nesting season and the continued survival of Puerto Vallarta’s cherished sea turtles.
