41. Puerto Vallarta Lifeguards Train for Sea Turtle Nesting Season

In preparation for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season, the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Firefighters Directorate has conducted specialized training for its aquatic rescue personnel. This initiative aims to strengthen the team’s ability to protect sea turtles along the region’s beaches.

Sea turtle populations have significantly declined over the past century due to demand for turtle products, habitat destruction, and ocean pollution. Although fossils indicate that sea turtles have existed for approximately 150 million years, current populations are a fraction of their historical numbers.

Supported by the Luis Munguía administration, the training included both theoretical and practical components for lifeguards, led by Dr. Mitzi Núñez from the Flora and Fauna Wildlife Research and Conservation Group. The curriculum emphasized proper handling and rescue protocols for sea turtles.

The Banderas Bay nesting season typically runs from June to December, with hatching usually beginning in July. However, human activities such as tourism, fishing, and illegal trade continue to threaten these species. Increased awareness and enforcement of conservation regulations are essential.

During the workshop, participants reinforced their knowledge of turtle behavior, threats, and safe rescue procedures. Misael López Muro, director of Civil Protection, stated, “As we approach nesting season, when turtles begin to lay eggs on our beaches, we’ve organized this training to ensure we’re prepared.” He also acknowledged support from Semarnat, Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources.

The training featured field exercises aimed at improving responders’ ability to assist distressed marine fauna, including species beyond sea turtles that may require specialized care. This initiative underscores the municipal government’s commitment to enhancing emergency response and protecting biodiversity during this critical period for the marine ecosystem.
