44. Puerto Vallarta to Open Maritime Route to Islas Marias

Puerto Vallarta is set to introduce a new maritime route to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Islas Marias, one of Mexico’s most ecologically significant and historically intriguing destinations. Once notorious as a prison colony, the islands now serve as a protected habitat home to endemic plants, vibrant coral reefs, over 21 species of sharks, and 10 types of rays. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2010, access to the islands is carefully regulated to preserve their delicate ecosystem, catering primarily to nature lovers, researchers, and educational groups.

This new route will position Puerto Vallarta as the third departure point to Islas Marias, joining San Blas and Mazatlán. The National Port System Administration (ASIPONA) reported that recent visits from TURIIMAR representatives and thorough safety and operational assessments confirm the port’s readiness to offer secure, high-quality service. Planning for schedules, promotional packages, and special offerings is underway, with details to be announced soon.

Once a notorious prison site, the islands transitioned to a tourist destination with the inauguration of the Islas Marias Tourist Center in December 2022, facilitating low-impact visits from Mazatlán and San Blas. The addition of Puerto Vallarta as a departure hub will make this remote and pristine environment more accessible, opening new opportunities for sustainable tourism and environmental education in one of Mexico’s most unique natural settings.
