After not being seen in Mexican waters for a long time, this year the white whale, better known as “albino,” has been seen again in Puerto Vallarta.
This cetacean, of the same species as the traditional humpbacks (megaptera novaeangliae), has almost entirely white skin.
Only three specimens are known in the world: one in Australia, another in Baja California, and this one in Puerto Vallarta.
Between 2008 and 2009, the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) verified that a juvenile whale with albinism characteristics was observed for the first time, and named it “Gallón de Leche.” In 2017, it was seen again in the company of an albino calf called “Costalito de Sal.”
In the case of the whale recently seen in Bay of Banderas, it was a surprise for the boatman Chipol Guzmán, who reported it.
There were several reports of it being seen last, so the bay could be considered part of its route.
