54. Puerto Vallarta Pushes for Cleaner Beaches ahead of High Season

Puerto Vallarta is strengthening its beach certification efforts for the winter tourism season. Playa de Oro is close to obtaining Mexico’s Platinum (Platino) certification, with 97% compliance expected by October, while maintaining its White Flag status. The city is also preparing applications for Playa Holi and part of Playa Camarones for pending external audits. Additionally, in November, plans are underway to apply for eight beaches to join the international Blue Flag program by 2026.

The Platino and White Flag certifications ensure cleanliness, safety, and sustainable management, while Blue Flag—one of the most prestigious globally—requires strict standards in water quality, environmental management, and services. Currently, Puerto Vallarta has four Blue Flag beaches, including Camarones, which regained its flag after water quality issues.

These recognitions improve beach quality and sustainability, benefiting residents and tourists alike and positioning the city as an eco-friendly, internationally recognized destination.
