23. Major Road Construction Project Set to Begin at Las Juntas Intersection

Site Inspection at Las Juntas Intersection for Road Junction Project

Date of Inspection: Tuesday
Conducted by: Jalisco’s Infrastructure and Public Works Secretariat (SIOP) & Municipal Government
Location: Las Juntas Intersection, Puerto Vallarta

Project Overview:

  • Objective: The primary goal of the project is to alleviate the ongoing traffic congestion between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas, which has been a persistent issue for commuters and travelers. The new road junction aims to streamline the flow of traffic in this busy region, which connects key highways to vital areas of the municipality and beyond.
  • Start Date: Late February (construction expected to begin at the end of the month)
  • Completion Date: Estimated to be completed in phases, with full operations expected within a couple of years.
  • Total Budget: 730 million pesos allocated for the comprehensive infrastructure overhaul, which will fund roadworks, bridge construction, and improvements in the surrounding areas.

Current Work and Progress:

  • Preliminary Progress:
    • As of now, preliminary work has already commenced on several components of the project.
    • Francisco Murguía Street is undergoing significant upgrades, which include the paving of the section that connects Highway 200 with Highway 544. This road serves as a vital access point, leading drivers toward Ixtapa and Las Palmas, and will provide improved access for both local and long-distance travelers.
    • The construction company, Mota-Engil, has already started work on completing a short highway exit near the Military Zone located in the northern section of the Puerto Vallarta airport. This new exit is designed to alleviate some of the congestion by providing an alternate route for travelers entering or leaving the airport area.

Key Components of the Project:

  1. Main Bridge Construction:
The main bridge is a crucial aspect of the plan, designed to greatly enhance traffic flow from Bahía de Banderas into Puerto Vallarta. It will provide a clear, uninterrupted route for travelers and reduce bottlenecks that often occur at the intersection, especially during peak traffic times. By improving the flow of vehicles, this bridge is expected to cut down travel times significantly for both local residents and tourists.
  2. Two Elevated Connections to Highway 544 Toward Ixtapa:
Two elevated roadways will be built to connect Highway 544, which leads toward Ixtapa, with other major thoroughfares in the region. These elevated connections will allow for a smoother passage of traffic, especially for vehicles traveling from the outskirts to central Puerto Vallarta, bypassing congested areas below. This is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams that frequently form along this stretch of road.
  3. Rehabilitation of Areas Near Home Depot:
In addition to improving the main intersection, the project includes a full rehabilitation of surrounding areas, particularly near the Home Depot location. These improvements will address the road conditions in this area, which have deteriorated over time. Paving, repaving, and other enhancements will be made to ensure that traffic flows smoothly, and the area remains functional for local businesses and residents.
  4. Replacement of Traffic Light with Pedestrian Bridge:
As part of the comprehensive overhaul, one of the existing traffic lights near the intersection will be replaced with a new pedestrian bridge. This change is aimed at improving both vehicle and pedestrian safety. By eliminating the traffic light, the flow of cars will be less disrupted, and the pedestrian bridge will provide a safe passage for pedestrians, avoiding dangerous crossings in high-traffic zones.

Expected Impact and Disruptions:

  • Traffic Disruptions:
The construction work will inevitably cause significant traffic disruptions along Highway 200, especially between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas. Travelers should expect delays and detours as lanes may be temporarily closed for construction. The project is expected to impact daily commutes for several months, and commuters are advised to plan for additional travel time during peak hours.
  • Increased Traffic during Construction:
During the initial phases, heavy machinery and construction equipment will be operating along the highway, adding to congestion. Local authorities are working to minimize delays, but motorists should stay informed about road closures and be prepared for slowdowns, particularly near the construction zones.
  • Long-Term Benefits:
While the construction will cause short-term inconvenience, the long-term benefits are expected to be substantial. Once completed, the new infrastructure will improve the overall transportation network, reducing congestion and making travel between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas more efficient. This will have positive economic impacts, especially for businesses that rely on the flow of tourists and goods in the region.

Strategic Importance:

  • Traffic Management:
The Las Juntas intersection is a critical juncture that handles traffic from three important routes: Highway 200 (from Bahía de Banderas), Highway 544 (from Mascota and Ixtapa), and the main avenue into Puerto Vallarta. As one of the busiest intersections in the area, it has long been a source of frustration due to frequent traffic jams, especially during tourist seasons or peak hours. This project is strategically designed to address these issues and ensure smoother traffic management for the entire region.
  • Tourism and Local Economy:
The construction of the new junction is not only essential for local commuters but also vital for the tourism sector, which is a cornerstone of the local economy. By improving accessibility and reducing travel time, the project will make it easier for visitors to reach popular destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, and Bahía de Banderas, ultimately supporting the growth of the local tourism industry.

Government Commitment:

The 730-million-peso investment underscores the state government’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and resolving long-standing traffic challenges. Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro, who announced the project on January 2, has expressed the importance of this project as part of a broader vision to modernize Jalisco’s infrastructure. The project is expected to serve as a model for similar future initiatives aimed at addressing regional transportation issues and fostering sustainable development.

This extensive road junction project at Las Juntas is poised to improve the quality of life for residents, enhance safety, and ensure smoother transportation for both locals and visitors to the region. The collaboration between state and municipal governments highlights the region’s dedication to infrastructure modernization and urban planning.
