Introduction of Smart Parking Meters in Puerto Vallarta
In a bid to improve traffic management and flow, Puerto Vallarta will implement smart parking meters in strategic locations. This initiative will target the Historic Center, the Romantic Zone, and the neighborhoods of Versalles and Marina Vallarta to enhance parking access and alleviate congestion.
During a recent session of the City Council, officials approved a plan to draft a call for bids for the virtual parking meter system. Concurrently, they progressed discussions on introducing new attractions, including a Ferris wheel and a Venetian carousel, aimed at boosting the city’s entertainment options.
Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía Gonzalez presented the project, emphasizing the Ferris wheel’s potential to become an iconic symbol of tourism and leisure. The council has tasked the Directorate of Strategic Projects and the Deputy Directorate of Municipal Heritage with carrying out a comprehensive technical and legal assessment. This evaluation will identify optimal sites and assess the operational viability for the Ferris wheel, carousel, public restrooms, and a soda fountain area.
Councilwoman Laurel Carrillo clarified that there would be no financial burden on the municipal treasury, as the undertaking will involve leasing public space for private investment, ensuring that public funds remain intact.
On the topic of the parking meters, the council has sanctioned the initiation of a bidding process for a 15-year concession concerning the public parking service. These advanced parking meters are intended to enhance availability, ease congestion, and generate revenue for the municipality, while also ensuring that each household is allotted one complimentary parking space.
The initiative garnered support from the council, passing with a simple majority of 12 votes in favor and four abstentions—reflecting strong backing for these innovative developments in Puerto Vallarta.
