33. Mexico Ranked Among Top Retirement Destinations

Many retirees and expats already know it, but Mexico continues to earn its reputation as one of the top retirement destinations in the world. According to the 2025 Global Retirement Index published by International Living, Mexico ranks fourth globally for retirement appeal. The index, which evaluates over 40 countries based on a range of criteria, emphasizes Mexico’s exceptional quality of life, affordability, and cultural richness.

Mexico’s strengths lie in its diverse environments—from bustling cities and colonial towns to tranquil beaches—and Puerto Vallarta stands out as a premier retirement haven within the country. Renowned for its stunning bay views, vibrant arts scene, charming Old Town, and welcoming community, Puerto Vallarta seamlessly combines natural beauty with a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The city scores highly on key indicators such as:

  • Affordability: Retirees find that their money goes further here, with lower costs for healthcare, housing, dining, and entertainment compared to many North American cities.
  • Healthcare: Puerto Vallarta offers access to high-quality medical facilities, including private clinics and hospitals staffed by English-speaking professionals.
  • Climate: With its temperate coastal weather year-round, Puerto Vallarta enjoys warm summers and mild winters, ideal for outdoor activities and a relaxed lifestyle.
  • Community Integration: The city is home to a large expatriate community, making it easier for newcomers to settle in, find social connections, and participate in local events.

The index evaluates 43 indicators across four major categories:

  • Financial Security: including access to pensions, social security, and cost-effective banking options
  • Health: quality of medical care, life expectancy, and healthcare infrastructure
  • Quality of Life: environmental conditions, air and water quality, recreational opportunities, and access to cultural activities
  • Personal Well-being: happiness, social connection, and lifestyle satisfaction

Unlike tourist surveys, the index draws on insights from long-term residents who live in Mexico full-time, providing an authentic perspective on daily life.

Apart from Puerto Vallarta, the report highlights other Mexican gems favored by retirees, such as San Miguel de Allende—the UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its colonial architecture—the vibrant cities of Guanajuato and Querétaro, and the Riviera Maya’s pristine beaches and archaeological sites.

Regarding safety, Bel Woodhouse, a Mexico correspondent, advises retirees to exercise common sense but reassures that “Mexico is a safe and rewarding retirement destination, provided you take sensible precautions.”

In summary, Puerto Vallarta combines natural beauty, modern amenities, a welcoming community, and an affordable lifestyle, making it an ideal place for retirees seeking a vibrant yet relaxing coastal experience in Mexico.
