In Puerto Vallarta, excitement is building as the city prepares to celebrate World Theater Day. Spearheaded by the PV Collective of Performing Arts Creators and backed wholeheartedly by Mayor Luis Munguía González’s administration, this initiative aims to honor the theatrical arts while showcasing the creativity and unity of the local performing arts community.
The festivities will commence on March 27 at 8:00 PM, with a captivating performance of “This Was a King” at the Cuale Cultural Center auditorium. This free production, directed by Alberto Fabián Sahagún Orozco, presents a unique adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” masterfully blending fiction with personal experiences to craft an emotionally rich and intimate tale.
As the celebration unfolds, attendees can look forward to a diverse lineup of performances and engaging discussions. Notable highlights will include “Al Aire Lola!,” “Chingue a su Madre el Mínimo,” and “Que no se culpe a nadie de mi muerte.” Moreover, theater lovers can participate in a conference exploring the History of Theater in Jalisco and experience the innovative collective production “Teatro en Versiones.” These events, scheduled from March 27 to 29, will take place at key venues like Platforma 322 and El Rey de Oros, demonstrating the collaborative spirit of various independent theater companies.
Juan Pablo Hernández, the president of the PV Collective of Performing Arts Creators, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, marking it as the collective’s first official project and a vital step toward revitalizing Vallarta’s theater scene.
Emphasizing the importance of sustainable support for the performing arts, Vice President Soledad Garcia stated, “We aim to establish more cultural spaces and advocate for long-term cultural policies.” This ambitious vision enjoys strong backing from councilor Maria Laurel Carrillo, who leads the City Council Commission for Culture and Cultural Rights, as well as Miguel Arturo Meza, deputy director of Economic Promotion and Tourism. Both officials underscored how arts and culture are integral to enhancing tourism and shaping the identity of Puerto Vallarta.
