148. Munguía Proposes Public Bicycle System and Bike Racks for Puerto Vallarta

Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González announced plans to establish a free public bicycle system in Puerto Vallarta, beginning with the installation of bike racks in key locations such as Plaza Caracol, the Malecón, the UMA, and Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas.

In an interview, Munguía explained that the initiative will be financed through lodging tax revenues collected by the Tourism Trust. “We are starting with a rehabilitation project to improve and expand the bike lane network, which will help us identify the most suitable locations for bike racks, particularly at major intersection points where main roads converge,” he said.

The project aims to promote sustainable mobility and enhance urban connectivity, while also benefiting public health and protecting the environment by reducing emissions.

One of the first areas to include new bike lanes could be near the intersection of Los Tules Avenue, Francisco Medina Ascencio Boulevard, and Vienna Street, linking the northern hotel zone with the Versailles neighborhood.

“For example, Plaza Caracol would be an ideal location for a bike rack, as it connects directly to the main avenue. Other potential sites include Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas, the UMA park, and the southern end of the Malecón,” Munguía explained.

The mayor noted that the project is still in the planning stage, so the number of bicycles and racks has not yet been determined. Once the rehabilitation phase is completed, the second stage will involve installing racks and acquiring bicycles for public use, making cycling accessible and convenient for residents and visitors alike.
